Sins of DIY Socket

Today we been fitting additional socket in the bed room, when we found cables in trunking going to bathroom area. Turns out a previous owner decided to fit a double socket, to charge his phone when using the bathtub. As convenient as that is, its a big “NO”. Although the socket was high up, there was still a big possibility that a child could use a shower head to spray water all the socket and cause electrocution. The client had a fuse box so the circuits were not protected by an RCD.

This is a serious mistake as no Handyman or owner should undertake alterations or additions to circuits in the bathroom areas, without proper qualifications and notifying the building control.

We have offered the customer to replace the 13A socket with a shaver socket. Shaver sockets are extra low voltage so they don’t pose any danger if there is presence of water.
