One of our clients has recently purchased a house. He has been renovating it room by room and has asked if we can fit additional sockets in his bedroom. We have looked at his current consumer unit and there was RCD protection on the circuit. Sockets in nearby rooms were in the middle of a ring and the room was on the first floor.
To avoid removing of carpets, moving of furniture, trunking and dust, we decided to go straight up into the attic and extend the ring to the third bedroom using 2.5mm twin and earth cable.
At the end we have tested all the additional sockets as well as other points on that circuit for continuity, insulation polarity, functional switching. We then checked prospective fault current and external impedance as well as continuity of bonding and Main Earthing conductors. As non of the work was notifiable and only effected a single circuit we have issued a MEWIC (Minor Electrical Work Installation Certificate) we have also notified it to NAPIT so that we can give out customer 6 years warranty.
Sockets Final finished look
This time we went with our standard white ClickMode Sockets due to their antimicrobial properties, solid build, long warranty and aesthetics that fitted with the rest of the house sockets. We kept the height of the sockets in line with the others in the house. Although onsite guide recommend height above 450mm we fitted them lower because the difference was too obvious to overlook. Also the client was on a budget and wouldn’t want to replace all the sockets to the new recommended height.
This was one of the easier jobs as all the walls that we pulled the cables through were plasterboard. Fitting a pattress box in plasterboard is very easy and fast. There was no need for bonding or any alterations to consumer unit.
